Battles in ShapeQuest were ATB-based, similar to late SNES Squaresoft titles such as Chrono Trigger and FF6. The battle system was designed to always function in an "active" mode where time is flowing even as you enter your commands to reward players for fast and accurate menu navigation. It turned out to be a little too fast-paced for most playtesters, who found it confusing and stressful.
